Choose As needed under Repeat when you add the medication. It has no set times or reminders. Whoever gives a dose logs it, so the circle can see when it was last given.

As-needed (PRN) medications

Step 1 of 7: Start a new medication. Tap New. Tap Med. Type the name. Type the dose, for example 500 mg.

Step 2 of 7: Choose As needed. Scroll down to Repeat. Tap Repeat. Tap As needed.

Step 3 of 7: Add what it is for, then create it. What is it for? is optional: tap it. Type Pain. No reminders: as-needed medications have no schedule. Tap Create Medication. Medication added. Tap Done.

Step 4 of 7: Log a dose when you give it. On Home: Not given yet. Tap Gave a dose.

Step 5 of 7: Check the time and log it. Given: Now, or tap an earlier time (here 15 min ago). Tap Log dose. Logged. Undo shows for a few seconds. Last given: the time and who gave it.

Step 6 of 7: If someone else just logged a dose. Tap Gave a dose again, then Log dose. Tom logged a dose less than 30 minutes ago: the app asks first. Tap No, that was it. The card now shows Tom’s dose.

Step 7 of 7: See every dose. Tap History. Every dose, with who gave it.

Free on iOS and Android.

Good to know

  • No reminders and no alerts. As-needed medications don't have a schedule.
  • Everyone sees it. Logging a dose lets the circle know, and the card shows "Last given" with the time and who gave it.
  • Double-dose check. If someone else logged the same medication in the last 30 minutes, the app asks before logging another.
  • Earlier doses. You can log a dose from the last 48 hours, but never in the future.
  • History. Tap History on the card to see every dose. You can remove a dose logged by mistake, and the circle is told.
  • Not part of adherence. Reports list as-needed doses separately from the adherence rate.
  • Can't switch later. A medication can't change between scheduled and as needed. Discontinue it and add it again.

CircleCare doesn't set limits on how often a dose can be logged. Follow the instructions from the doctor or pharmacist. The app is a tool, not a doctor.

On the web, the same As needed option is in the medication form.
